Our top find when visiting Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica

Wednesday, April 25, 2012 by Dan Ilves

Manuel Antonio National Park, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, was almost bulldozed 40 years ago to make room for development. Thankfully, smart minds prevailed and the land now occupied by the park was left intact. Because Manuel Antonio is easily accessible (only 2.5 hours from San Jose by car on the new highway, or 25 minutes by air from San Jose), it is one of Costa Rica's most heavily visited parks. Manuel Antonio is unusual beacause it is set on the Pacific and has some of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica within the park itself. Manuel Antonio is famous for its troops of monkeys and birds. To avoid the crunch of visitors and have a better chance of seeing wildlife, get up early and visit the park at 7am when it opens (daily except Monday). Once inside the park, paths are clearly marked. Do not miss the hike to Cerro Catedral, a forested peninsula with amazing views of the coastline behind you. Tip - the park has a rest stop with bathrooms and showers. Bring a towel and a picnic, and enjoy a swim in the park's beautiful beaches.

Outside the park are a series of public beaches you can enjoy at your leisure. There are a number of stands offering beach chairs, drinks, and umbrellas. We recommend Mary's, about halfway down the main beach.

Where to stay? One of the top choices in this area is the Gaia resort, on a hill, overlooking the forest and the Pacific. This small hotel offers 20 rooms in various configurations, and opened 6 years ago. You arrive at a parking area off the main road, and are whisked up a steep hill to the hotel on a golf cart by one of the hotel's staff members. Once you are at the main reception area, you either go up the stairs to the main restaurant/bar, or down to your room in one of three wings.  La Luna restaurant has breathtaking views of the forest and the ocean, and this is where sophisticated travelers and locals in the know come to see the sunset and enjoy a leisurely meal. The hotel has pools cascading on 3 different levels, with a small bar where you can enjoy a drink or light fare. The smallest room starts at 350sq ft, and is decorated simply with white linens, wood floors, and wicker furniture. Bathrooms are comfortable and well laid out, many with jacuzzis and windows with views of the forest.  Our favorite rooms are the larger suites and deluxe suites facing the Pacific, a number of which have a private roofdeck above the room. The largest accommodation is the villa, with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, on 3 levels, with a big sun terrace on the top floor. Gaia is all about privacy, modern design, intimacy, unique architecture, and a welcoming staff that will greet you by name within an hour of your arrival, no matter where you are. The hotel also has a terrific spa, offering a wide range of treatments.

Gaia is primarily an adults-only resort. Children 14 or older are welcome. The hotel has an excellent concierge/front desk that can organize just about any activity you request in the area. They operate a courtesy shuttle to the beach, Manuel Antonio park, or area restaurants. The rainiest period is typically September and October, although afternoon showers are frequent starting in May through November. As Gaia is part of our Signature hotels and Resorts program, we offer our clients complimentary breakfast, a $100 spa credit, and a $50 resort credit.

Is it time to consider a rail vacation?

Tuesday, February 21, 2012 by Dan Ilves

There's something magical about a rail journey.  There's the sense of comfort of sitting back and enjoying the world go by, as you are moving to...somewhere. It's not like taking a flight or driving somewhere. There's a different sense of the journey, and of the arrival.

The finest of the world's trains offer even more -- a luxury experience, from dining to personal comforts, that make a rail journey quite special and unique.  Certainly you won't find that level of dining and comfort on a flight, car or motorcoach. There's also a more scenic view of the countryside, especially if you're not driving.

As today's travelers seek to enjoy the journey as much as the destination, rail vacations become a compelling option. In recent years, there have been a several new luxury rail journeys that have become available to the discerning traveler, along with the classic favorites.

In an era when being "social" is quite the rage, there's hardly a more social vacation.  For those conscious about the carbon footrpint they leave behind, trains are the most eco-friendly means of transport.

Perhaps the grand-daddy of them all is Europe's Venice Simplon-Orient Express, with its refurbished classic 1920's carriages. One of the newer options is The Maharajah's Express in India, which offers travelers the opportunity to cover large distances and visit more out of the way, and somewhat inaccessible sites, in the utmost of luxury. Not far afield from us is western Canada's Rocky Mountaineer.

Of course there are many opportunities from which to choose. Read more about rail vacations you might enjoy.

Ayers Rock is one highlight of your Australia vacation packageA solar eclipse is one of nature's magnificent events, and something well worth planning a trip around. So we wanted to get the word out about the Solar Eclipse Down Under.  (No, it's not the latest wrestler coming into the ring, it's Mother Nature at her most splendid.)  Imagine being in Australia's Daintree Rainforest, with front row seats to see a solar eclipse. Cruise the Daintree River to its mouth, for uninterrupted viewing. Sorry, we can get you to Australia any day, mate, but a solar eclipse doesn't happen every year.  The dates for this extravaganza are Nov 6 - 19, 2012.

If this is your cup of tea, then you'll want to know all the stops have been pulled out for this one.  From staying at the Daintree Eco Lodge, the Shangri-La in Sydney, Sails in the Desert in Uluru, and a lot of surprises. TravelStore is pleased to be a sponsor of the Beverly Hills Wine Festival. The event is being held this year at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday, February 26th, from 2 - 6.  Yes, we know, it's the same day as the Academy Awards. But wouldn't you rather enjoy the afternoon sampling some fine wines and ales, say hello to TravelStore, and then go home in a much happier mood to enjoy the festivities on TV?

To make it a bit special, there will be a special live tribute to Whitney Houston at the event, featuring some guest performers.  And if you really can't stand to miss the red carpet before the show, the plan is to broadcast that at the event, too.  Check out the website for more information.

As we are a sponsor, you can offer you tickets at reduced rates from this link.

Five Family Friendly Vacations in Britain in 2012

Saturday, January 21, 2012 by Dan Ilves

A family recently contacted us wanting ideas for a special trip in Britain.  So it got us thinking and we thought we’d share five with you... Are you in?

1. Experience the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Scotland is growing in popularity. This year is the 62nd Military Tattoo commemorating HM, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.  The Military Tattoo is a great event. Who doesn't get excited by pageantry and bagpipes?  In addition to exploring  Edinburgh during the Tattoo, we can add a visit to Glamis Castle, the childhood home of HM, The Queen Mother, St Andrews and maybe Scotland's oldest distillery.

2. Harry Potter Tour of England. Explore London through Harry Potter's eyes before you travel on to Gloucester and Oxford where prime city locations were transformed in the films into Hogwarts School.  Your itinerary includes a tour of The Warner Bros. Studio London - The Making of Harry Potter, which showcases a huge array of sets, costumes and props.

3. Savor the Royal Scotsman Rail Journey and Scottish Island Experience. Explore Edinburgh before joining the The Royal Scotsman Orient-Express train for a unique and luxurious rail journey of a lifetime.  Follow it up with a fantastic island hopping adventure taking in the remote and windswept Outer Hebrides, the romantic isle of Skye, Mull and the historic islands of Iona and Staffa. Now honestly, have any of you done this one yet?

4. Smell the blooms at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. While the Floriade in Holland is the horticultural event of the decade, not everyone will clamor to get there, and the Chelsea Flower Show is one of the most famous flower shows in the world.  Spend a week and  include visits to gardens like Highgrove, the private gardens of the Prince of Wales, Blenheim Palace, Hampton Court Palace, the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew, RHS Wisley and Sissinghurst.  Oh, of course, having proper afternoon tea is a must!

5. An Exclusive Castle Celebration in the Scottish Mountains. Enjoy the exclusive use of a highland castle with friends.  No, it's not haunted as far we know... Spectacularly situated on the shores of Loch Ness, the castle sleeps up to 30 people.  Your experiences include a private cruise along Loch Ness, a trip on the famous Jacobite Steam Train, the opportunity to ascend a mountain in a private gondola, and a gala dinner in traditional Scottish dress as a finale.

Yes, there's more happening in England this year than the Olympics!

One more reason to consider Costa Rica vacation packages

Thursday, December 29, 2011 by Dan Ilves
on costa rica vacation packages you're bound to find some great beaches. As the year comes to a close, many of us slow down a bit to enjoy the holidays, take stock of the year that's passed and what's ahead, and hopefully consider what vacation packages to plan.  There are so many wonderful places to visit, and our bucket lists aren't getting any shorter.  As we tick a destination off, there's usually a new one to add.

But in the spirit of slowing down, perhaps a Costa Rica vacation is worthy of consideration. After all, it is one of the best family vacation destinations. The country is pro- American, is very eco-frienclly, offers lots of outdoor adventures and activities, and has sloths.  Sloths?  Ok -- let's just roll the video and dispense with the explanations.

We hope you can slow down at the end of the year, and our travel agency wishes you wonderful travel adventures in 2012.  Learn more about Costa Rica vacation packages.

Tours to Cuba on the horizon

Tuesday, December 27, 2011 by Dan Ilves
One of the long anticipated, soon-to-be "hot" new destination is Cuba. While Europeans and Canadians are visiting Cuba, Americans, due to political reasons, have been severely limited in booking vacation packages to Cuba.

While travel to Cuba is open to Cuban-Americans, it is still highly restricted for other Americans.  While recent announcements were made by some tour operators about upcoming travel vacation packages, these have now pulled back from the market.  Some of the problems have to do with strict requirements on how funds can be handled.  Another is the higher cost being assessed for U.S. visitors. While Obama has moved to lessen travel restrictions, it's hard to know whether a possible change in administration will further tighten requirements.  Here's a recent Miami Herald article.

From the Cuban perspective, while tourism dollars would do wonders to provide improvements, there's probably fear on the impact mass tourism will have. While for some Americans that have visited Cuba on humanitarian exchanges in recent years, the experience was somewhat reminiscent of visiting Russia in the early '70's. Likewise, the infrastructure in Cuba is quite limited, in terms of hotels, guides, rental cars and access for tour busses.

One of our partner suppliers, who is licensed to engage in travel-related transactions involving Cuba, is planning on operating trips between February and May.  The programs will be escorted by a noted authority on Cuba, and visits are planned with local professionals, artists, private homes, community projects and a tobacco farm. We stay tuned for more opportunities for Americans to visit Cuba.

For tours to Cuba operated by US suppliers, contact one of our travel agency for more information.

What's your dream vacation?

Friday, December 23, 2011 by Dan Ilves
A recent article in a trade journal discussed what constitutes a "trip of a lifetime."  It's hard to pinpoint, of course. For some it has to do with the the powerful lifetime memories one's travel vacation packages create.  For others, such trips are created when a traveler has a unique trip created for them from scratch, something that's personalized to their interests, yet different, more exotic or more adventurous.  Yet for others, it has to do with the amount of personal enrichment a particular trip generates for the traveler. What's your take?

Certainly there are magical places on the planet that on their own can create lifelong memories and valuable personal enrichment: an African safari, a tour of India, a trip to Antarctica, or exploring The Galapagos.  Each of these is a very special experience. But often, it's creating unique personal experiences for a traveler that makes a trip so special, and not just the trip itself.

For each traveler, of course, what makes vacation packages special, or trips of a lifetime, for them varies quite a bit. For some it can be just selecting the perfect hotel for their visit. For others it's something that challenges their comfort zone. For someone else it's getting "behind the scenes" at a place and getting an insider's view.

At our travel agency, unless a client is already thinking out of the box, we might ask for their permission to allow us to plan some particularly unique or enriching experience during their trip, something that may be personally rewarding or enriching for that individual.  It's often an activity the traveler hasn't thought of doing, and maybe that's because they were not aware of some of the options that might be available to them.  Of course, that's where we step in, and where a good travel agent can offer much value.

Let us know what made your most memorable vacation package special, or a "trip of a lifetime?"

The morphing of escorted tours -- what's your take?

Wednesday, December 21, 2011 by Dan Ilves

you might enjoy an air balloon excursion on an escorted tourIf you were lucky enough to visit Europe on a Contiki tour when in college, you probably recall how much fun it was traveling with like-minded people, making new friends, sharing free wheeling travel experiences, and perhaps forming long-term new friendships.

So what happened to that free-wheeling openness and flexibilty as we grew older?  Why do some people feel the last thing they want to do for their vacation is travel with a group of "strangers" on a tour?

There's a lot to be said about independent travel, the specialty of our travel agency. There are a number of reasons to have your trips custom-designed by our travel agency experts.  If you know what you want, you can get it exactly tailored to meet your needs. You may want to visit places that are off the beaten path of most escorted tour packages. For some, when it comes to touring Europe, for example, the best European vacations are done on their own.

There's also a lot to be said for escorted tours.  But more to the point, the escorted tour has morphed in recent years, and the choices and styles now available shows that tour companies are reponding to what travelers are looking for, more so than ever before.  A tour is not just a tour... anymore.  The best tours have evolved to guided vacation packages... A tour can be at your leisure, and slow paced... A tour can provide unique experiences you'd be hard pressed to arrange on your own -- like enjoying lunch at the home of an Italian contessa... A tour can be a framework -- provide a barebones itinerary with hotels and group transportation, but  leaving it up to you what you choose to do in each place...

If you prefer not to travel with a large groups, you can find an escorted tour designed for fewer travelers...Or maybe driving your own car about Europe, or traveling by rail and dealing with your luggage isn't more engaging for you than being driven on an air-conditioned motorcoach with an experienced guide on hand... A tour can be more economical than planning independent travel...

It's also not the case that there's a right or wrong answer. Different strokes for different folks.  And many customers will take an escorted tour one year, perhaps to a new destination, and travel independently other years, or when returning to a destination they've been to before. If you've wondered about taking a tour, the pros and cons, contact our travel experts for assistance.  If you have an opinon, let us know!

India tours growing in popularity

Thursday, December 15, 2011 by Dan Ilves
One of the trends our travel agency is seeing is a growing resurgence in vacation packages to India. While some of our customers have done the typical northern India route, some are returning to southern India, to visit the famed tiger reserves, and to explore more of India's treasured sights. While we work with our in-country contacts in setting up customized itineraries for our clients individually, a growing number of pre-arranged itineraries are also available for those that prefer to travel with a group.

For example, for 2012 one of our preferred suppliers has introduced 12 itineraries, comprised of six escorted tours, plus six optional extensions. The escorted tours range from 8- to 14-days, while the shorter optional extensions are from 3 - to 5-days. These extensions include Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indian jungle, Rajasthan and Kerala. In fact, two of my colleagues just returned from India where they visited the tiger reserves.

If India is on your bucket list, you can search our database for selected tour programs to India, or contact one of our travel experts.  If you've visited India, write in and tell us what your favorite experiences in this magical country were.

Travel bloggers that are making a difference

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 by Dan Ilves
african wildlife safariTravel blogger Pam Mandel writes: "People want to do something that transcends their classic travel experience. We tap into the idea that when you travel it changes you, and you want to make the world a better place.”  Indeed. Many of our clients are vying for vacation packages on which they can enhance their adventures with unique experiences that provide more personal enrichment. Many return from their travels and make commitments to support worthwhile causes.

Passport with Purpose was created by Pam and some fellow travel bloggers, and doing some good things.  It's encouraging to read about so many efforts like theirs that seek to help make the world a better place, one small step at a time.  Certainly culturally enriching travel can also help improve the world.  We know that participating on an African wildlfie safari helps encourage tourism and the protection of wildlife.  And there are other examples.

Travel is a gift we enjoy. The holiday season is a time for gift giving, and there are so many ways we can give and make a positive difference. Do you have stories to share about travelers making a difference?

Perhaps you'd also care to consider a gift of travel to someone.

Luxury vacation packages on the Riviera Maya at Banyan Tree Mayakoba

Friday, December 9, 2011 by Dan Ilves
Banyan Tree Mayakoba fron lobby entranceMexico's Riviera Maya, the coastal region south of Cancun, continues to grow with new five-star resorts.  Unlike Cancun, however, where hotels crowd each other for a bit of beachfront space, the resorts along the Rivera Maya are comfortably spaced out, providing much more privacy and a more luxurious ambience.  Riviera Maya is also closer to some of the Mayan ruins worth seeing further south, and cenotes worth exploring.

One of my favorite resorts here is the Banyan Tree in the Mayakoba area, where some of the region's most luxurious properties are located.  Banyan Tree, a Thailand-based resort company, built it's first property in North America here.  Mayakoba is about a 25-minute drive from the airport. The all-villa, exclusive resort offers a blended design of Mexican and Thai elements, and a calm serenity permeates the resort.  Cuisine is excellent, and the spa here, staffed by the excellent Thai-trained specialists, is top notch.  Signing privileges are available should you care to dine at the neighboring Mayakoba properties.  Golfers will enjoy the very fine championship course.

The villas at Banyan Tree are quite private, with their own gated entry, personal pool and private patio area.  For those needing a luxury getaway this winter and early spring, you can enjoy an additional free night's lodging by booking a two night's stay. Add another night and we'll include a fabulous 90-minute spa session you won't readily forget.

Seach for additional vacation packages for Mexico vacations.

Italy vacation packages: Exploring Florence

Wednesday, December 7, 2011 by Dan Ilves

Florence's Arno River A recent post on vacation packages in Italy spotlighted choice adventures in Milan. Now on to Florence.  While small, Florence is grand, and a showpiece for the Italian Renaissance.  I love it because it's easy getting around by foot, and there's something new to see and admire at nearly every corner. It's certainly a highly desirable destination to include on Italy vacation packages.

In search of engaging experiences for you to try, here are seven that catch our fancy:

1. Attend a cooking class at a cooking school, and learn how to prepare some of the best Italian dishes. No doubt a highlight will be dining on your creations.
2. Take an exclusive guided private tour through the Vasari Corridor, connecting the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti.
3. Rent a mountain bike, or better yet, a Vespa, and explore the hillsides around the city.
4. Enjoy a hot air balloon ride over the Chianti hills.
5. Certainly when in Florence you've enjoyed the views of the Arno River. if visiting in the summer months, consider a river jaunt in one of the old Renaioli punts, and admire the Ponte Vecchio from a unique angle.
6. Learn the antique technique al fresco painting at the Buonfresco workshop.
7. Enjoy a tour of the city by Segway...

What are your favorite experiences in Florence? There's much to do in Florence, and great hotels to experience and luxuriate in. Our top hotel picks will VIP your stay with daily breakfast and more.

Italy vacation packages: Things to do in Milan

Thursday, December 1, 2011 by Dan Ilves
Duomo in MilanItaly is the perennial go-to destination for our travel agency.  We probably have more clients booking vacation packages to Italy than just about any other single country.  Hey, what's not to like?  From wine to olive oil, pasta to seafood, style and fashion to joie de vivre, Italy rocks!

Today's travelers are looking for unique travel experiences, so we're offering some novel ideas for things you might consider for Milan, one of the fashion capitals of the world.  Beyond the Duomo and the fashion district of Via Montenapoleone, here's a few considerations:

1. An entertaining and enriching wine tasting class taught by sommerliers
2. In true Agatha Christie style, consider a murder mystery dinner full of suspense and surprises.
3. If you're a Dan Brown fan, visit the Cenacolo, the capital of the Sforza dukedom, and enjoy da Vinci's "Last Supper" from Robert Langdon's point of view.
4. Consider getting tickets in advance for a performance at the world renowned La Scala Opera House.
5. Did we mention fashion? For designer clothing, Milan is top drawer...

Do you have some personal favorites?
For your stay in Milan, our preferred hotels will include complimentary daily breakfast during your stay, along with other amenities.

Luxury Mexico vacation packages at all-inclusive Grand Velas Riviera Maya

Friday, November 25, 2011 by Dan Ilves
Grand Velas Maya Riviera Ambassador suiteI've just returned from a few days at the award winning all-suite Grand Velas Riviera Maya resort.

Vacation packages to Mexico's Riviera Maya resort area started to develop around 1995, with 14,000 rooms.  Today, the resort area has about 40,000 rooms, with more resorts coming, and the area enjoys over 1.25 million visitors. Grand Velas is one of the newer five-star all-inclusive luxury resorts here.

There are three room types in three areas of the property: Zen Grand Suites were built in the coastal jungle, away from the beach, but adjacent to the enormous spa as well as the convention center.  The slightly larger Ambassador Suites are ocean-view and built around the huge and lovely pool area. The Grand Class Suites are ocean-front and offer the largest suites.

There are several themed restaurants here, including French, eclectic, fine Mexican, Italian and more. (Wine included). While all-inclusive, guests are provided a bill to sign at meal's end, and if you add any (additional) gratuity it will be charged to your room account.  The beach service is great, though the ocean bottom here can be a bit rough (and some may wish to have water shoes). For some the highlight at Grand Velas Riviera Maya is the spa, all 89,000 square feet of it, and its numerous water-based treatments.  Treatment prices are no less than one would find in the States at a fine spa.

All-inclusive resorts also make for great family friendly vacations, and there were several extended families with young children staying at Grand Velas and having a great time.

For luxury family vacations or just a couple's getaway, we offer many vacation packages to Riviera Maya's best resorts, including Grand Velas, or read more about Mexico vacations.

Villa le Scale reopens -- luxury Italy vacation packages await!

Wednesday, November 16, 2011 by Dan Ilves

villa le scaleItaly is always one of our most sought after vacation destinations. Travelers never tire of Italy, and there's always new resorts and activities to explore. So what about a luxury vacation package exploring Italy's vacation isles?

The seven-room Villa le Scale, on Italy's most popular vacation island, Capri, is re-opening next May after refurbishment.
The stunning 19th century villa continues to appeal to those desirous of Capri's surrounding landscapes and views of the Bay of Naples, and the fine service here, where you're treated as a resident.

One of the few remaining historic homes on Capri, Villa le Scale offers a private, sophisticated appeal. Each of the historic home's guest rooms is individually decorated, each style taking its theme from a centerpiece artwork. The private gardens on the property are three times the size of the villa, and all guest rooms look out on them.

Most rooms also have terrific views of the bay. Amenities here include a heated pool and 8-station gym. Staff can help guide guests to the best activities, restaurants, Capri's secrets and more. And our travel agency can make all your necessary arrangements.

What happens to that leftover soap you leave behind?

Friday, November 11, 2011 by Dan Ilves

soapOur travel agency loves to read stories on how companies in the travel and tourism business find new ways to recycle, or better yet, do good deeds that benefit mankind or the planet.  Within our own travel agency business, and as an ASTA Green Member, we continue to recycle, reduce use of paper and plastic.

When we travel we usually stay in hotels or on cruise ships, use the complimentary soap provided, and then move on, leaving those leftover bars of soap behind.  So what can happen to all those soap bars? I loved this story.
